China has improved its railway services for international travelers, following its decision to issue the new version of foreign permanent resident ID card starting from December 1, 2023. According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., the website and app of 12306, China's official railway ticket-booking platform, have been optimized. Holders of the foreign permanent resident ID cards can register the website or app, and purchase train tickets online; besides, they can complete the identity verification, checking in and checking out at railway station's turnstiles in a self-service manner, just like Chinese citizens holding identity cards.
Moreover, starting on November 28, China's railway departments have provided the online identity verification services for foreign passport holders, who were previously asked to present the original copies of passports for checking at the counters at railway stations when purchasing tickets at 12306. The new online verification services, however, only need the international travelers to log in 12306 and enter in the information such as names, nationalities and passport numbers as required and complete verification online. Foreign travelers can also choose to upload the photo of their passports for manual inspection or go to counters at railway stations.
Please note that travelers holding foreign passports can purchase railway tickets and get onboard only after they finish the identity verification, and it's advised to check the verification status in time lest there would be any inconvenience. Please refer to the website or app of 12306 for more information.
